Teaching Statement
My teaching is informed by Matt Copeland’s work on Socratic Circles. I emphasize an attitude of collaborative investigation through the rigorous examination of classic and contemporary texts – where a “text” might be a canonical reading or a neglected treasure from the history of philosophy, or it might be a film, poem, short story, or current event. I stress that philosophical examination is something that we are doing together. In practice, this means close-reading and prepared questions before class, active listening and charitable interpretation during class, and reflective writing throughout the semester.
I aim to communicate the love of wisdom to my students while at the same time demonstrating the practical benefits of philosophical inquiry. Every object is ripe for philosophical analysis, and every person is the person to perform this craft.
